Capable yet Compact - The 2022 Ford Maverick
The 2022 Ford Maverick has not received as much press coverage as its all-electric sibling, the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning. However, this all-new model fills a need for buyers who want a truck's capability without its gas-guzzling cost, and who want compactness without sacrificing capability.
The Maverick nameplate might have been originally used on a compact car, but Ford has revitalized and repurposed the name to fit into its pickup truck lineup below the mid-size Ranger. It features a hybrid powertrain setup, electric motor, great capability, and an even better price tag.
Practicality
The 2022 Ford Maverick is a small pickup truck that offers the best of both worlds to buyers. Its small size is easier to drive, easily manoeuvering around the city streets in Winnipeg, but inside it provides enough interior space to seat five passengers to escape to the countryside and away from the hustle and bustle.
It also offers practicality in its fuel consumption with an estimated 5.9 L/100km city fuel consumption that puts other trucks to shame. Capability does not suffer at the hands of practicality though; the Maverick can tow up to 1,814kg when properly equipped and features a FLEXBED that allows the bed to be used in many creative ways.
Technology
The Maverick features a standard 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system that features Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and 4G LTE in-vehicle Wi-Fi hotspot. A 4.3-inch productivity screen keeps drivers alerted to vehicle operations, and many driver-assist technologies are available on the Maverick. Ford provides standard pre-collision assist with automatic braking, a rearview camera, and auto high-beam headlamps. Additional systems, such as blind spot and adaptive cruise control, are also available.
Performance
The Maverick comes standard with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder assisted by an electric motor for a combined 191 horsepower. This setup is only available with front-wheel drive (FWD) and a continuously variable automatic transmission. However, buyers have the option to upgrade to a nonhybrid powertrain as well, which is a 250-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder that can be equipped with all-wheel drive (AWD).
Ford's 2022 Maverick is the first standard fully hybrid pickup available in Canada, and it does not disappoint.
Pricing
Ford offers the 2022 Maverick in three model configurations: XL, XLT, and Lariat. Starting at $25,900, the Maverick XL offers many standard features for a fairly low price, including the hybrid engine, Wi-Fi hotspot trial, touchscreen infotainment system, FordPass Connect, LED headlamps, rear under-seat storage bins, and more.Â
At $28,500, the XLT version upgrades both looks and capability by providing drivers with cubby storage in the bed, 17-inch painted aluminum wheels, an upgraded interior, power locking tailgate, and wiper-activated headlamps.
At $34,450, the Lariat takes the cake with even more premium design features inside and out, as well as creature comforts such as an acoustics windshield, ambient lighting, dual-zone electronic automatic temperature controls, and intelligent access with push-button start.
